Chapter 11
Kevin was as drenched as he was that day. But so was Wendy. The sky was still dark for a morning and the storm was like a veil around the two of them at the bus bay on top of the hill they had rode up with their bicycle. The bicycle was leaning on the big green dustbin. They were both already late for school and they had decided to linger a bit longer for blaming their lateness on the rain was a valid excuse. Their legs dangled from the seat on the bus bay and the rain continued to crash down wildly.
Kevin loved the thunderstorms. When the lightning flashes, Wendy would shriek and hide behind Kevin’s’ soaked sleeve. He would then cup her other ear tightly with his hand and the thunder would be less intimidating to Wendy. It was the closest he could get to Wendy and he always felt like a hero. Like her protector over her fears and travesties. That day, after covering her ears from the thuder, Kevin swept his fingers across her long fringe behind her ear neatly.
“I hate the thunder.” Wendy remarked. “But the rain is great.” She said looking blankly at the rain, “allows us to spend time together. Away from everything else.”
Kevin placed his arm around her shoulder and there was this magical moment where they both said nothing at all and simply stared at the rain together.
There was a sudden flash of lightning and Wendy buried her head in his neck closer than usual and it felt snug. After the thunder resounded, she did not withdraw herself from the position. Kevin leaned forward and kissed her forehead.
“Love. You.” He said soft enough for himself to hear only.
